If Rickey played today he'd hit .250 with a .380 OBP. Why so low? He's 49 years old and hasn't played competitively in 4 years. There is no other player like Rickey. If he just would have had more of an interest in fielding...

I've watched Rickey play as often as possible since 1980. He is the reason i like baseball. After his domination of the independent leagues the last few years how can there be any argument against him coming back to play at the major league level?

I think we should let Rickey play, but how about we wait until 2010 so he will have played in 5 separate decades. If he comes back and steals a base it will be my all time favorite baseball moment.

Rickey transcends sports and should be allowed to play another game before sliding headfirst into the sunset.
I'd say Rickey should become a manager but I'm not sure Rickey is cut from the right cloth. I do believe Rickey would be an unforgettable TV color commentator

Bring Rickey back to Oakland and let him get the recognition he deserves from the place where it all started for him. With the fans who love him. Let him feel our love and respect for what he has accomplished. Let him end his career where he should. Its the right thing to do. C'mon Billy. Make this happen for us and him. He can end it in the place where he started it. Before you move the team to Fremont.

I've been a fan of Rickey's since 1989 when I caught my first A's game. No one, but no one since then, has been as exciting to watch at the plate and on the base paths. He was a terror to opposing team's defenses.
Rickey remains my favorite baseball player of all time. He'll surely be a Hall of Famer, and no matter what others might say about his persona, his baseball feats cannot be denied. He already holds so many important Major League records that may never be broken. I say give Rickey a chance to enter another ultra-exclusive club: the "300-300 club". He only needs 3 more home runs to do it. I've seen Rickey lately and he is in teriffic shape, a testament to his work ethic. Give Rickey a chance, "Let Rickey play!"

Hey, I met Rickey once, seemed like a nice guy.
Does anyone question he was the greatest leadoff hitter of all time?
Ok, I'll play devil's advocate.
First, a quiz:
What's the #1 job of the leadoff hitter?
a) Hit home runs
b) Steal bases
c) Get on base
d) Score runs
If you said "D," then I'd agree with you. And there was one player (only 1) with a better runs-scored/plate appearances ratio than Rickey. Any guesses who?
naw, not Maurey Wills.
not Vince Coleman.
not Ty Cobb -- close, though
not Lou Brock..
it was Billy Hamilton from the 19th Century. Look it up if you care to.
However, being as "Sliding" Billy went to his reward over 75 years ago, Rickey's our next best choice. He loves the game -- it's not about money or ego (..ok, maybe a little ego) so let him have a cup of coffee!

When Harold Reynolds worked on ESPN's Baseball Tonight, he was asked who he thought the best player ever was. Instantly he said Rickey Henderson. Bill James, the father of modern stats said " If you split Henderson in half, you would have 2 Hall of Famer's." His domination of the '89 playoffs are why the A's won. Game 6 of '93 WS, his lead off walk set the table for Carter's walkoff. Quite simply...the best player ever. I've been lucky enough to meet Rickey dozens of times over the last 28 years. Every single time he went out of his way to make me feel special. My fondest memory is from 1982. I attended an Oakland A's booster club luncheon with my Dad. I was the only kid there, Rickey thought that was great and asked me if for address so he could send me some stuff. The items I received are still on display in my office. I rarely go to A's games anymore, but I long for one last time to see Rickey play. Billy Beane please due the right thing and bring Rickey back...he is the reason you have a WS ring.

Rob thinks Rickey should be able to retire as the legands that preceed him--Cobb, Ruth, Maris, Aaron. Seriously he is one of the best of all time. First all time in walks, runs, leadoff HR, and Stolen bases when he last played (yes the steroid man passed him in walks since then and I belive is threatening his run records as well).
Let him play for the A's and retire in Rickey style.
rickey939:
No, Bonds isn't even close to Rickey in runs.
|
rickey939:
Well, he is "somewhat" close, but I don't see him breaking that record before he retires after this year (I am assuming).
|
Jeff M.:
Barry holds the walks record now but I refuse to acknowledge that. Most of his came intentionally while Rickey earned every walk he has. Should be an asterisk next to the walk record as well. Rickey is the true walk leader.
|
Jeff M.:
And he has 298 homeruns. Let the man get his 300!!!

Rickey Henderson is one of the greatest players of all time, and he didn't get to end his career right.

Ricky, the world needs your baseball "joie de vivre" once more. And definitely more third person interviews.

Compare Rickey to all the other MLB reserve outfielders today instead of comparing him to the Rickey Henderson of 1990, and you`ll see that Rickey is still as good as these backup outfielders.
Doesn`t that make sense people?

As a kid growing up in Oakland Rickey brought me so much joy. This best memories I have with My grandmother was listening to the A's on the radio and Ricky dominating the Game. Please let Ricky retire as an A's with the respect he desires. I also hope that you annouce it with enough time so that folks like myself can plan to attend.
Let's Go A's

Let him play. Let's get Rickey and Julio Franco for the Rangers. Couldn't hurt to add to the mix with Sosa and Kenny Lofton.

The more you people write "Rickey", the more "special" the name becomes..."Rickey can do anything if he puts his mind to it, go Rickey, Run Rickey Run, think he was Tom Hanks or something..

Rickey Henderson is one of the greatest players of all time. I would think that the Mets would at least let him come up for a few games so he could retire his way. If not maybe the Devil Rays.

Because in the immortal words of Rickey Henderson, “This is Rickey calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey wants to play baseball.”

LET RICKY PLAY!
His knowledge alone will make him an above average player. And if Julio Franco can still play at his age, Ricky will do fine.

i have grown up watching the tail end of ricky's career. even when he wasnt playing his greatest, he was one of the best on the field. growing up i modled my base running after him. it has made me a better player, and i would love for other kids to get the opportunity to watch him run.
